Melvin "Jake" Jacobson, age 80, died at his residence under the care of Madison Hospice after a lengthy battle with cancer on February 3, 2012.

He was born on July 21, 1931 at Madison, SD to Adolph and Mattie (Johnson) Jacobson.

He was married to Sylvia Ness before he married Kasey (Beasley) Coxwell on July 24, 1978 in Sioux Falls.

He is survived by his wife - Kasey of Wentworth. One son - Rick (Kim) of Brandon. Two daughters - Sherry Ford and Kathy (Stan) Jackson both of Sioux Falls. Four grandchildren - Tera, Dustin, Jennifer and Josh. Three great grandchildren - Jackson, Nixon and Alice. A step daughter - Teresa (Brad) Wayne of Gainesville, GA. Two step grandchildren - Jordan and Cal. Two sisters - Helen Gibson of Madison and Ione Larson of Fargo, ND.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother - Robert one sister - Marion Howard and a step son - Dean.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, February 7, 2011 at Weiland Funeral Chapel with Rev Terry Knudson officiating.

Inurnment with military honors will be held at Graceland Cemetery at a latter date.

He grew up in Madison where he attended Madison High School. In 1948 he enlisted in the US Air Force where he served on active duty during the Korean War. in 1953 he joined the Wisconsin Air National Guard. In 1961 he transferred to the SD Air National Guard where he served until he retired in 1985.

He was a member of the Madison VFW Post and Elks Lodge. He was an avid fisherman, hunter, golfer and Green Bay Packers fan. There will be a prayer service at 7:00 PM on Monday at the Weiland Funeral Chapel which is in charge of the arrangements.
