DH Abernathy was a sucessful merchant and businessman who built his retail trade from the 1870s thru the early 1900s. In an 1894 letter to his brother-in-law Jim Preuit and business associate Hub Taylor sent from St, Louis, he said "I don't know when I will start the house....". A year later he built the home now known as "The Abernathy House" on Quitman Street in Pittsburg, Texas. His travels to New York, St Louis and other merchant cities are recorded in the many letters and telegrams to his partners and family. The stress of his financial endeavors took it's toll, and his heart gave way too early, leaving many friends and family behind. Over 1000 people attended his funeral services in 1910. His dear wife Mary Lou Pitts-Abernathy lived another 40 years after his death.
