According to the 1850 census, Buckner Abernathy had three living children in his household, which appear to have been born of his first wife, Mary Francis Graves. They were married in 1834. His first wife's father was William Branch Graves (1795-1840) and her mother was Harriet Hilda Abernathy. His first wife died September 4, 1848. Her death location is listed as Mississippi but her grave location is unknown. On May 30, 1849 he married Mary Agnes Kesterson. There are three children listed in the 1850 census: Nancy Catherine, Augustus Cabot, and Henry Clay. The 1850 census also lists his second wife, Mary Agnes Kesterson. In the 1860 census, he and Mary Agnes appear to have the following children: Urceila 13, Emma 8, Camelia 6, and David Harper 2. A girl child who was named Mary Agnes (later called "Aggie") was born to them in April, 1864. Unfortunately, mother Mary Agnes Kesterson-Abernathy died about a week after Aggie was born. Aggie never knew her biological mother. Reverend Buckner later married his third wife, Amanda Pitts who probably helped raise the younger children.
