Born November 7, 1867 in Wyocena, Wisconsin, Charles Hawkins came west and located at Spokane, where he was employed as an accountant by the Northern Pacific Railway. He arrived in 1909 with his family, and for six years was head of the division of accounts of the Camas Prairie system, resigning in 1915 to accept the superintendency of the Lewiston, Nezperce & Eastern Railway, better known as the Johnson Line, then building across Craig Mountain with Vollmer as its objective. In 1922 he returned to the Camas Prairie and was made storekeeper.
He was a member of the Idaho Catholic Laymen's association; past state deputy of the Knights of Columbus, serving in 1932 and 1933 and filled various offices in the local council of the order. He was prominently identified with the Boy Scout movement and presided at the courts of honor held there. He served as president of the Nez Perce County Tax Payers' League and was active in the affairs of the Republican Party.
