Royal Henry Hawkins may been born in Wisconsin. He homesteaded near Flatwillow in 1909. He returned to Minnesota for two years (1916-1918), then brought everything on train to Musselshell, then by horse and wagon to Flatwillow. He raised wheat and had a small herd of cattle. He bought 40 acres adjacent to homestead land in Yellow Water area.
He rented the homestead to his son-in-law William Johnke in 1926, and after visiting relatives in Minnesota, he and daughter Henrietta drove his Model T Ford south and west to California, and up to Lewiston Idaho. He took care of people's lawns for several years. During World War II, he worked at defense plants in Avon, Idaho, and Tipton, CA. He stayed in California doing yard work until he lost his vision.
