Barlow, 89, of Yorktown, who died Sunday at the Delaware County Health Center following an extended illness.
A native of Scott County, Ky., Mr. Barlow moved to Shirley as a young man with his parents and worked in a bottle factory. He later came to Yorktown where he lived most of his life. He worked with his father, Thomas Barlow, operating the Barlow Shoe Repair in Yorktown and continued the family business for about 50 years, retiring in 1973.
He was well-known to Yorktown are residents as the "little man" riding the rear of one of the Yorktown fire trucks, an activity he continued until four years ago. He became a member of the Mt. Pleasant Township Fire Department in 1920 when the department was still using horse drawn soda-acid tank wagons and continued to serve for 52 years. Following his retirement, he was made an honorary member of the department. He was also a member of the Yorktown Church of the Nazarene.
Survivors include three sisters, Miss Anna Barlow and Mrs. Robert (Lula) McKibben, both of Yorktown, and Mrs. Perry (Clara) Mahoney, St. Louis; five nephews and six nieces.
Rev. John B. Haley Jr. and Rev. A.F. Hayes will officiate. Burial will be in the Yorktown Cemetery. Friends may call at the Richman Funeral Home, Yorktown, after 2 p.m. Tuesday or at the church one hour prior to services.
