In Memory of David Bernhard Larson

David Bernhard Larson was born January 22, 1927, the youngest of five children on the homestead of Ed & Mary Larson near Sanish, ND. He died May 7, 1991 in Seattle, WA, after a brief illness. His early years were spent with farm chores: driving hay wagons, tending cattle, harvesting; attending the local one-room schoolhouse and spending idle moments by the nearby Missouri River. His first visit to Washington state occurred when he attended 9th grade at Puyallup High School. The following year he returned to North Dakota to complete school.

After time spent in occupied Japan serving as a member of the Parachute Infantry, David settled in Puyallup. There he was introduced to the paint and glass business by his uncle Reuben. There, too, he was introduced, by way of a blind date, to Betty Glorine Bengtson. On November 10, 1949, they were wed in her hometown of Sumner.

With Dave still working in the paint business, the couple moved to Seattle in 1951 where he worked for C & C Paints. Later they relocated to Burien where he served as store manager. In 1962, Dave ventured into residential construction as foreman and in 1966 was confident enough to start his own business. Dave Larson Construction developed into a firm which constructed distinctive homes throughout the greater Seattle area, while never growing so large as to lose Dave's personal interest and concern.

Though a sizeable portion of his life was spent off the farm, he maintained his contact with the soil; whether collecting unusual varieties of rhododendrons or tying up berry brambles, he enjoyed his role as steward of the land. In recent years his love of the outdoors increasingly extended to the golf course, an activity that also allowed him to spend time with new and old friends.
He was an active member of Lake Burien Presbyterian Church in which he served as deacon. He was also involved with the Kiwanis Club of Burien and the Mutual Business Club of Seattle.

David is survived by wife Betty; son Steve at Richmondville, NY; son & daughter-in-law Paul & Kelly of Burien; brother & sister-in-law Mederith & Harriet of Brush Prairie, Washington; brother & sister-in-law Shirley & Dorothy at Salkum, Washington; sister & brother-in-law Nell & Lloyd Powell of Crescent City, California; brother-in-law & sister-in-law Keith & Berniece Johnson of Puyallup; 14 nephews and nieces.
