He was born July 19, 1917 in Sanish, ND, to Edwin B. Larson and Mary Ellen (Watterberg) Larson. Shirley farmed with his father Ed on the Missouri River south of Sanish until the Garrison project flooded most of the farm. He continued to farm on the land above the reservoir. In 1948, he married Dorothy Pratt of Graham, Washington. In 1957 Charles Shobe took over the farm and the Larson family moved to New York. Shirley took over management of James Cagney's farm in Stanfordville, NY. In 1958, he moved to Pleasant Valley, Utah, to attend welding school. In 1959, he moved to Salkum, Washington, bought a farm and raised beef cattle. He worked for Tacoma City Light as a utilityman and operator until his retirement in 1979. He raised blueberries after retirement. His wife, Dorothy, passed away in 1993. In 1994, he moved to Grants Pass, Oregon where he married Bonnie Rust.
He is survived by his wife, Bonnie Rust; children, Douglas Larson, Vancouver, Wash., Dale Larson, Gresham, Oregon, Debra Wilhelmi, Olympia, Wash., and Becky Wells, Normandy Park, Wash.; brother Mederith Larson, Brush Prairie, Wash., sister, Nell Powell, Crescent City, Calif., and five grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held in Salkum, Washington. He requested that any remembrances be sent to the Good Samaritan Nursing Home in New Town.
Dad may have moved around the country in his life, but Sanish/New Town remained the center of his universe. He kept his many New Town friends all his life. He continued to read the New Town News until his death. (New Town News) January 6, 2003
