Bertha Oegerle was born the 3rd child and daughter of George and Johanna Zimmerman Oegerle, who came from Ohio in a covered wagon to homestead by the river near Upland, Kansas. While working at Fort Riley she met a young soldier, Newell Allen Thompson, and left her family to join him in Michigan after he returned home. There they were married on June 4, 1901. She bore him two children, Ray Allen and Fern Alwilda while in Michigan. After some years in Otwell, Arkansas, they moved to Junction City, Kansas, where many of her family still lived. Also buried in Highland Cemetery are her parents, brothers George and John, and sisters Rose Roediger and Kate Witt.
