The son of Andrew Feaster Colvin and his wife, Jemima Petrie.

Served in the Red River Campaign and was wounded at the battle of Mansfield (Mansfield, DeSoto Parish, Louisiana).

Bush married Sarah Catherine Crosby in Chester, South Carolina on September 26, 1851. They had the following children: Julia Melvinia Colvin, Emma P. Colvin Beck, Francis B. L. Colvin, John K. Colvin, Garland Hardwick Colvin Jr., Andrew Jerome "Ronnie" Colvin, Claude Elmo Colvin, Katie Ethel Colvin, Josie E. Colvin Lewis, and Carrie C. Colvin.
