To the best of my knowledge, Stephen's date of birth is not known, although the Seeley Genealogical Society (SCS) gives it as 1761. It is more likely that he was born after 1750 and before 1760. Three places are given as his place of birth: USA, CT, Fairfield County; USA, NY, Westchester County; and USA, NY, Saratoga County. There is evidence that the family was in all three of these places. However, without knowing his date of birth, it is not possible to know where the family was when he was born.

His mother was Joanna/Hannah (Beardsley) Seeley, b 30 Apr 1730 in USA, CT, Fairfield, Stratfield, d before 1779, probably in USA, NY, Westchester, Salem.

Stephen and two of his brothers fought in the Revolutionary War. After his service, Stephen became a member of the Religious Society of Friends (aka Quakers), and raised his family as Quakers.

The date and place of death given here are different than information from the SCS, which indicates that he died on 13 Sep 1824 in USA, NY, Saratoga, Charlton. The information given here is taken from the petition of his widow, Ruth, and son, Gershom, for Letters of Administration for his estate. That petition was filed with the Surrogate Court of Niagara County, NY, and stated that Stephen died intestate on or about 13 Sep 1828 in the Town of Somerset, Niagara County, NY.

Although Stephen's burial place has not been located, and perhaps never will be, it is most likely in USA, NY, Niagara County, where he was living at the time of his death. Based on the fact that he was a Quaker, it is quite possible that his burial place was not marked.

Although it has been suggested to me that I should delete this memorial because it is a "Burial Unknown," and the location of his burial was not determined within 30 days of the posting of the memorial, as per some of find-a-grave's suggestions, the number of Stephen's descendants who have visited this memorial, left messages, contacted me, provided additional information, and added links, tells me that this memorial should remain. Thank you.
