On July 28, 1991, she was fatally injured when the car she was riding in was hit head-on by another vehicle driven by a man with a blood alcohol level of .196, nearly twice the legal limit. She was pictured in a billboard along Tipton Street near downtown Seymour, sponsored by MADD.
She was interred at the First Marion Baptist Cemetery near her husband, Fieldon Lett Johnson, who predeceased her. She is survived by her daughters, Pauline Foster (Loran), and Mildred Engel (Charles), and sons, Gordon and Glenn, as well as many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
