In January 1943, Joseph was drafted into the U.S. Army to serve in World War II. Joseph was involved in the Aleutian Islands Campaign in the Pacific Theater of Operations and his occupational specialty was administrative commissioned officer. He was assigned to Det. 14 Sig. S. Co., Fort Glenn; Det. 14 Sig. S. Co., Camp Earle; and Det. Sig. Sec., Alaska Department. He received the Victory Medal, Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon with one Bronze Battle Star, four Overseas Service Bars, and the Good Conduct Medal. In January 1946, Joseph received an honorable discharge as a Technician Fourth Grade with over two years of service overseas.
A few weeks after he was discharged from the U.S. Army, he married the former Lelia Busch in Auburn, Michigan. The wedding was January 26, 1946.
By late 1948, Joseph and Lelia lived in Garden City, Michigan and Joseph was working for Michigan Consolidated Gas Company. On October 18, 1948, the Indiana Gazette, a Pennsylvania newspaper, published a news story about an explosion at the Melvindale compressor station which killed one and injured four other employees. Joseph was one of the employees injured. He received back injuries and a fractured wrist and was taken to Wayne County General Hospital.
By the early 1950s, Joseph and Lelia were living at 32272 James in Garden City. Joseph was still working for Michigan Consolidated. They had three children, Theresa, Joel, and Thomas.
Around 1974, Joseph and Lelia moved to San Diego County, California. By 1976 they were living in Poway at 12204 Holland Road.
Joseph died December 29, 1976 at 1:38 PM. He was pronounced dead on arrival at Palomar Memorial Hospital in Escondido. He suffered from acute cardiac failure.
Joseph was buried in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Southfield, Michigan.
