Martha Ellen Stogdale was born to William Stogdale and Susan Gashwiler Stogdale in Randolph County, Missouri. She was a sister to John, Louisa (Hicks) and Virenda (Shores). Her father died in 1850 while searching for gold in California. Her mother remarried to a Robert Adams by which Martha had several half brothers and sisters. Martha married John C. Adams of Moweaqua, Illinois in 1867. They had several children including Ellington, Ada (Kirkman), Eureka (Taylor), Zora (McGrath), Jessie (Bramblett) and Gracie (who died in infancy). Martha and John are buried in unmarked graves in the Adams-Gorden Cemetery near their daughter Gracie.
