When John Washington Dorsey was born on February 9, 1865, in La Porte, Indiana, his father, Volney, was 22 and his mother, Mary, was 18. He married Myrta Mae Johnson on October 23, 1897, in Hale Township, Hardin County, Ohio. They had eight children during their marriage. He died on October 10, 1940, at the age of 75.

Shortly after his birth, his Family migrated to High Point Township, Decatur County, Iowa. By the age 13 he was a working as farmer on the family. In the 1890s he left home for Kenton, Ohio. There he married Myrta Mae Johnson on October 23, 1897, in Hale Township, Hardin County, Ohio. During the 1900 Census John was living with his wife along with her widowed father, Philip Gatch Johnson and brother, Lester on Madison Street in Kenton, Ohio. The home was owned by John. He listed is occupation as a House Painter.
In Jan 1904, John moved his family to near La Plata to a farm purchased from Mr. Gentry. He later purchased 18 acres of W. W. Self's farm west of La Plata on Oct 1911 for $875. In Jan 1914 he sold his farm near west of La Plata and moved his family to 40 acres that he purchased for $75 per acre 3 miles south of Unionville in Wilson Township, Putnam County, Missouri. By 1920 He had moved his family to Sherman Township, Putnam County, Missouri. He stayed there up until his death on Oct. 20, 1940. The Dorsey Family refers where they settled in Sherman Township, Putnam County, Missouri as the Home Place. The farm house, barns, and smoke house are long gone and were torn down in the 60s or 70s. The farm was at present day 143rd ST and Gray Pine Trail, in 1930 the farm was two tracts of land one 52.45 acres and the other was 30 acres.
