Joseph Erickson, son of Samuel and Elizabeth Cox Erickson was born in Cumberland County, New Jersey on May 4, 1856. He later moved to Mason County, Illinois with his parents. En route from New Jersey to Illinois, five of his brothers and sisters died. In 1876 his parents and five children: Thomas, Joseph, Mary Ester, Hannah and Addie moved to Cass County, Iowa.

Joseph married Sadie Shields on June 15, 1882. To this union four daughters were born: Sylvia (Portwood), Pearl (Bek), Cora (McLaren), and Blanche (Denham).

Most of Joe and Sadie's married life was spent on farms around the Massena and Cumberland areas. At one time, Joe worked at the Massena Mill. They spent eight years on a ranch near New Castle, Wyoming before returning to Cumberland, Iowa.
