Robert's parents were Mary Lang and John Lawson from Low Church Parish in Paisley, Scotland. Their families had been born in Paisley for many generations.

Robert's father made Paisley shawls, a product that made the town world famous. In 1856 when the shawl industry declined Mary and John took most of their children to America where they joined John's parents and grandparents who had immigrated over 20 years earlier.

They came to Polo, Illinois. About 3 years later Robert died at the age of 21. He shares a headstone with his father who died about 3 years after Robert.
