In 1832 John's parents and many of his siblings immigrated to Canada and then to Polo, Illinois in 1840. Mary and John stayed in Paisley and did not join John's family in America right away.
While in Paisley John and Mary had 11 children between 1829 and 1850. They were John, Mary, Janet, Mary Lang, Robert, William, Margaret, George, Peter, Elizabeth and Emeline Lawson. Finally in 1856 Mary and John and most of their children came to Illinois. Six years later John died and was buried in Polo.
In 1865 Mary and several of her children moved to Traer, Iowa. The reason for the move may have been that Mary's daughter Maggie had married James Abel Childs who had an Uncle James Aplington living in the town of Aplington, Iowa, a town near Traer. It is believed the family connection led to the move.
