Mary is the daughter of John Lawson, Jr. and Mary Lang. She immigrated with her parents and siblings to America from Scotland in the summer of 1856. The family first settled in Polo, Ogle County, Illinois. There she married her cousin Robert McChristie Lawson on March 24, 1865. They moved with Mary's family to Traer, Tama County, Iowa where they farmed for about 10 years. They had 8 children. William, Margaret and Sarah died young. Emma, Harriet, Agnes, Alex and George survived to adulthood. In 1887 Mary and Robert and their children moved to Louisiana where Robert was a rice farmer. During WWI Mary knitted 57 socks among other things for the Red Cross. She and Robert were very active in their church and were devout Presbyterians. Mary died about 2 weeks after Robert.
