Stewart H. Gilston was the only child of John W. and Gertrude I. (Jackson) Gilston.

Stewart was a graduate of New Bedford Textile School, New Bedford, Massachusetts and worked in the textile industry. He was an Overseer for cotton mills in Massachusetts, W.Virginia, Maryland, and Ohio in the 1920's and 1930's. He was the youngest Overseer of his time in the cotton mills of New Bedford, Mass. Later on, he worked at textile mills in Paterson, NJ and Philadephia, PA.

Stewart was very partial to Auburn automobiles. He was mechanically inclined, as he tore down the engines in his cars on a regular basis.

He was also a radio enthusiast, building radio sets in the 1920's that could pick up Australia. We have reason to believe that he was involved in the early operation of WDAU radio in New Bedford (which is now WNBH ), the oldest radio station in Massachusetts, that went on the air in 1921.

Stewart was married first to Ellen Dorothy McCracken (1903-1963) on May 19, 1923 in Warren, Rhode Island. They met while attending the New Bedford Textile School.

They had two children together, a son,
Stewart Harley Gilston, Jr., (1923-1923)
who passed at age 13 days; and a daughter,
Barbara A. (Gilston) Bosworth (1928-1973).
Additionally, they have seven grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

The family was enumerated on the 1930 U.S. Federal Census living in Fairhaven, Bristol County, MA, Dist. 3-186, sheet 2-A.
