Mrs. Elmer (Lena Bailey) Armitage, 86, of Waterville died Sunday morning at St. Joseph's hospital, Mankato, after an extended illness of four months. She was born in Waseca, December 5, 1872, the daughter of Philo C. and Lurinda Dodge Bailey, who were two of the earliest settlers in Waseca county.
Her father came to Wilton in 1857, opening up a hardware store. Later, he became co-proprietor of the first hardware store in Waseca. He held many county and state offices among them state senator, and county commissioner.
Lena Bailey grew up in Waseca, living in a brick house just east of The Methodist church, She was married to Elmer Armitage, an employee of the Leuthold Clothing store, and they later moved to Waterville.
Mr. Armitage survives, as does one brother, Fred, of Pasadena, Calif.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 5, at St. Andrew's Episcopal church, Waterville. The Rev. Douglas Patts, conducted the services. Interment was made in the old family plot at Woodville cemetery, Waseca. Casketbearers were James and Robert Lynn, Robert Rausch, Fred Hrdlichka, Ralph Smith and Frank Dusbabek.
