Death of Mrs. Franklin Williams
The sad intelligence has come from St. Louis, Mo., that Mrs. Gertrude Bailey Williams died, August 21st, at her home in St. Louis of Bright's disease*.
Gertrude Bailey was born in Wilton about forty-four years ago. She grew to womanhood in this county and received her education in the Waseca schools. She taught in the different grades of the public schools of this city for several years, finally resigning her position. Later she taught in Helena, Montana, where she met and married Mr. Franklin Williams. They lived in Helena for some time, then moved to Buffalo, N.Y., and later to St. Louis.
She leaves besides her husband, a son and two daughters. The eldest child, the son, is about sixteen years of age. Hon. P. C. Bailey, the father of the deceased, and her sister, Mrs. Eugene Fiske, of Helena, Mont., also survive her.
Mrs. Williams was a most estimable woman, a devoted wife and mother, an affectionate sister and daughter, and a loyal friend. She has many warm friends among her old schoolmates and pupils in this city. They will learn of her untimely death with keen sorrow.
Mr. Bailey, who was visiting in Mitchell, received word about a week ago that Mrs. Williams was very ill and immediately started for St. Louis.
*The death certificate lists malaria as the cause of death. Malaria can cause kidney failure which may explain the reference to Bright's disease.

Included in an October 13, 1905 letter to Mrs. L. W. Swan, Mr. P. C. Bailey writes:
"I intended to start east on the 14th of August on the 7th I got a line from my daughter Gertrude who had been living in St. Louis for the past 3 1/2 years stating that as soon as they could pack up they were going to move to Norfolk Va. & on the 11th I got a letter from her husband (Mr. Williams) stating that Gertrude was very sick & that Gertrude thought she was going to die & wanted to see me so I started the next morning for St. Louis & found her at the Baptist Sanatorium where her husband had taken her as she would have the best of care & was shocked to find how very sick she was, on August 21st she died. She had three children aged 10 & 11 1/2 girls & a boy of 13.
Mr. Williams had made business arrangements which would keep him busy in Norfolk for 2 years & was to be there by the middle of September. My daughter Kate came to St.
Louis from Helena, Mont on the 25th & was anxious to take the girls home with her so it was arranged for her to take the girls & leave the boy with me & on Sunday the 29th Kate and the girls came with me to Waseca. As soon as Mrs. Bailey** got the news she started for home & arrived here on tuesday the 29th. Kate and the girls left for Helena on Thursday the 31st."
