DEATH OF DR. W. S. THROCK-
MORTON
Well Know Physician and Surgeon,
Formerly of Ninevah, Pa., Dies at
His Home in Canonsburg - Aged
80 Years.
Dr. William Simpson Throckmorton, a physician and surgeon well known in Western Pennsylvania died at his home in Canonsburg, Pa., at 4:30 o'clock, Thursday afternoon, April 4, aged eighty years, after an illness lasting about two years.
He was born at the Throckmorton homestead, three miles west of Waynesburg, March 2, 1838, being the son of Morford and Nancy Simpson Throckmorton. His father removed to Greene county from Freehold, New Jersey, and was one of the early settlers of the county. His mother was a daughter of the Rev. John Simpson, a pioneer Methodist preacher in Greene county. He was educated at Waynesburg College, from which he was graduated and later completed a course in Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia in 1866. He located for the practice of medicine that year at Ninevah, Pa., where he remained for forty-three years. During that time he had extensive practice and was widely known in this part of the state as a successful physician. He had served as president of the Greene County Medical Society and was a member of the State Medical Association. He kept at the front of his profession and at different periods pursued special courses in the medical colleges of Pennsylvania and New York. Throughout his life he was active in church and Sunday school work and through his instrumentality the Methodist Episcopal church at Ninevah was founded. He was chosen as a delegate to the General Conference of the Methodist Episcopal church, held at Baltimore, a few years ago.
In 1907 he removed to Canonsburg, Pa., where he continued the practice of medicine until his health failed, being engaged in his profession more than fifty years.
He was united in marriage in 1866, to Miss Caroline M. Hill, daughter of Jesse Hill, of Waynesburg, Mrs. Throckmorton's death occurring after they removed to Canonsburg. Later he was united in marriage to Miss Lydia Smith, of Urbana, O., who survives him. He also is survived by four children of his first marriage: Mrs. Jessie T. Kerr, wife of Dr. Thomas Kerr, of Oakmont, Pa.; Dr. Charles B. Throckmorton, of Canonsburg; Dr. William L. Throckmorton, of Oakmont, and Dr. Morford Throckmorton, of Beaver, Pa. E. R. Throckmorton, of Waynesburg, is a brother, and Mrs. Caroline M. Waddell, of Waynesburg, a sister of deceased.
