PITTSFIELD, MAINE—Freeman H. Elkins Jr., 88, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 7, 2011, at Sebasticook Valley Hospital in Pittsfield, Maine.

He was born in Benton, Maine on March 3, 1923, the son of the late Freeman H. and Carolyn (Smith) Elkins Sr.

Freeman attended schools in Benton, Maine and Fairfield, Maine. He retired from Thayer Hospital following 18 years of service. Previous to that he was employed by Barrows Transfer and Storage in Waterville, Maine.

Freeman enjoyed his family deeply, and loved attending family gatherings. He had a great sense of humor, always ready with a joke or two. He was greatly loved, and will be sadly missed by his family and friends.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his first wife, Audrey (Vigue) Elkins; his son, Carroll Elkins; his daughter, Judy Thibeau; his grandson, Jonathan Elkins; his sister, Ernestine Synder; and his son in law, Frank Cook.

Freeman is survived by his loving wife of 13 years, Beverly Buck; his son, Roland Elkins; his daughters, Beatrice "Tish" Varney and her husband, Earl, Myra Cook, and Penny Green and her husband, Bill; his sister, Helen Murphy; his step daughter, Sherry "Wiggy" Stewart and her husband, Lendall; his son in law, Jules Thibeau; his daughter in law, Gracie Elkins; and several grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Visiting hours will be from 4 to 7 p.m. on Sunday, December 11 at Lawry Brothers Funeral Home, 107 Main Street, Fairfield, Maine. A funeral Service will take place at 1 p.m. on Monday, December 12 at Brown Memorial United Methodist Church, 36 Church Street, Clinton, Maine. Burial will held in the spring at St Francis Cemetery in Waterville, Maine.
