Edith M. Amateis Newkirk, 91 of Bridgeport, Nebraska passed away Thursday, October 07, 2010 at the Morrill County Community Hospital in Bridgeport. Her funeral service will be held on Monday, October 11, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. at the Presbyterian Church of Bridgeport with Pastors Scott and Leanne Thompson officiating. Burial will follow at Oregon Trail Memorial Cemetery in Bridgeport. Visitation will be Sunday from 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Bridgeport Memorial Chapel. The family requests that memorials be made to Morrill County Edith was born on September 21, 1919 in Broadwater to Peter and Dominica "Minnie" (Ricco) Amateis. She attended rural Broadwater Kelly School. After finishing her education, Edith was employed as a weigh lady at the Riley beet dump west of Broadwater. Edith wed Louis C. Newkirk on November 6, 1948 at the Newkirk family ranch. To this 61 year union two sons, Joe and Rick were born. Her sons, grandchildren and great grandchildren were the most important part of her life. The Newkirk's moved to their farm just outside of Bridgeport in 1951 and lived there until ill health required both of them to enter the Heritage of Bridgeport care facility in early 2010. Her sons remember Edith doing her part of the farm operation by raising chickens and selling eggs. Mom's egg money financed many of the necessities of a growing farm family. One of her son's dominant memories of their mother is her unbeatable fried chicken dinners. Edith was a member of the presbyterian Church of Bridgeport. Although she was not involved in any organizations, the center of her life was her family and she quietly supported her husband, sons, grandchildren and great grandchildren in all that they did.
She was preceded in death by her husband Louis, parents, brotherJohn, Tony, Albert, Frankie and Joe; sister Mary and sister-in-law Pauline Newkirk Larsen. Edith is survived by her sons Joe (Shelly) and Rick (Margaret); grandchildren: Douglas C Newkirk and Cari L. Newkirk, Lisa (Ryan) Shultz and William (Jill) Newkirk; great grandchildren: Holden and Kaden Shultz and Britteney and Brady Newkirk; brother Pete Amateis, Jr. (Donna); sister Josie Lussetto and numerous nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews
