Elbert McCaffree, long time resident of Lake Mills, died at Naeve Hospital, Albert Lea, MN. He was born near Waverly Junction, Waverly, Iowa on February 1, 1869. He was the last of ten children, two of whom were Methodist ministers. A sister's son is a missionary in India at the present time. He was married to Janie Price of Lake Mills on December 23, 1891. The Rev. Floyd McCaffree, a brother, officiated at the wedding. Their first home was on his widowed mother's farm near Waverly. Then they moved to Waterloo, Iowa where he was employed on a horse-drawn street car and then to Lake Mills where he built a home, later owned by Mrs. Martin Vedvig. Their only daughter, Meryl, was born at the E.D. Hinman farm, known as the L.W. Nelson farm, west of Lake Mills. Mr. McCaffree built the second house near Asbury M.E. Church. He spend much of his life as a carpenter. He worked five years doing odd jobs around Cool Spring Canning Co. He suffered from ulcers of the stomach. He had gone to church with his daughter on August 8th and died that night. His wife had died October 20, 1943. The funeral was held at the Asbury Church, with the Rev. Falck in charge. Burial was in Hinman Cemetery (present Salem Lutheran) Note: His death date is 1948, according to the cemetery record.
