Hannah Rettie Ann McCaffree, the daughter of Charles and Cynthia Messinger McCaffree, was born in Putnam county, MO. on March 9, 1855. At the age of 7 years her parents moved to Bremer county IA and, with the exception of a short time spent in St. Ansgar and Buena Vista county, her entire life has been spent in this and adjoining counties of Black Hawk and Butler. She was married on July 14, 1875 to John M. Dewey. To this union were born eight children, all of whom are living; Roy E. of De Soto, MO.; Leo G. of Shell Rock; Ethelyn A. of Greensboro, NC, Virgie M. of Des Moines; Mrs. Alfred McDowell of Bristow, and Lyle C., Leslie H. and Mable of Janesville. Besides these children she leaves to mourn the loss, eleven grandchildren and six brothers and two sisters: W. H. McCaffree, Mrs. R. W. Cuffell and Mrs. Ed Sewell of Waverly; Rev F. McCaffree of Scottsbluff, NE; Rev. L. A. McCaffree of Nickerson, KS; J. W. McCaffree of Cedar Falls; C. E. McCaffree of Lake Mills and 0. J. McCaffree of Hampton. Her husband preceded her in death having passed away March 1919. She departed this life July 2, 1925 at the home of her sons Lyle and Leslie, where she had lived for several years. Funeral services were held at the home of Lyle and Leslie Dewey, east of Janesville, Sunday, July 5 at 2:30 pm, the Rev. C. G. Fort, pastor of Shell Rock Methodist church officiating.
