Hester Rude was born in Mangum December 2, 1889 to Samuel D. and Sallie Pyeatt Rude. Her parents had recently arrived from Collin County, Texas and homesteaded on the Elm River north of Mangum. In 1892 her family made the run into the Cheyenne Arapaho reservation at its opening and homesteaded north of Carter, Oklahoma. Hester moved with her parents to Mangum in 1899 where her father had various business interests and later served for several terms as Chief of Police. She attended schools in Mangum and completed the last two years of high school at William Woods College in Fulton, Missouri. In 1909, Hester graduated from Christian University in Enid with a degree in art.

Hester had the honor of having a town named after her. After Cal Rosser, townsite man for the Wichita Falls and Northwestern Railroad, met her during dinner at her parents' home, he said: "Hester – Hester, that will be the name of the first town south of Mangum."

Hester married Marvin Young in Mangum on November 10, 1910 at the Methodist Episcopal Church South. They had three children: Geraldine (Jerry), born February 1, 1913 in Mangum; Mack Marvin (Sonny), born November 11, 1915 in Mangum; and Samuel Dickson (Dick), born April 29, 1917 in Mangum.

Following her husband's untimely death in 1919, Hester began a life of work outside the home. She first worked in Young Brothers & Guthrie, the hardware store in which her husband had been a partner. After the store was sold, she became a sales lady for Lovett Furniture in Mangum until the mid-1930s. She then moved to Oklahoma City and took a job in the gift department of John A. Brown's. Seven years later, she moved to Hobart and worked in the Stanley Furniture store until her retirement in 1958. She moved back to Mangum at that time and was active in her church and in various organizations.

Hester was preceded in death by her husband, her sister Babe Rude Pace in 1930, her father in 1938, her mother in 1950, her son, Sonny, in 1967, her sister Lela Pyeatt Rude Porter Holmes in 1972, and her daughter, Jerry Young Paden in February 1978, just six months before Hester died. She was survived by a son, Dick Young of Norman; a sister, Myrtle Leighton Rude Boyle and a brother, Ike John Rude.
