Michael was the oldest son of Michael Schaffer and Margaret Walborn. He became a law-partner in Illinois with William Jennings Bryan's father. Later he was appointed as Chief Justice of the Court in Salt Lake City, Utah Territory. He sat on the famous CASE of "ELIZAH versus BRIGHAM YOUNG." He decided in favor of ELIZAH, one of the WIVES of the MORMON CHIEF. This DECISION raised such a storm of protest among the MORMON LEADERS against the JUDGE that his life was threatened, and he was advised to leave.
