He was born March 25, 1937, in Anderson, the son of Grover and Nellie (Riddlin) Johnson. He was a life-long resident of Anderson, at one time owned and operated the Checker Oil on Mounds Road and later retired in 1999 from the ABC Rail Company. Don was a member of the Amvets Post 692, Eagles Lodge 1771 and the American Legion Post 408; he was an avid fan of the Colts and NASCAR. Shortly after retiring, he began volunteering at Community Hospital in Anderson.
Survivors include his two daughters and son-in-law, Anita Johnson and Donna and Tim Soverns; three grandsons, Keith Miller, Tim Soverns and Tyler Soverns; three great-grandsons, Andrew Miller, Thomas Miller and Samuel Miller; sisters and brother, Margie (husband Bill) Amick, Ruth (husband Gene) Scott, Patsy Kellem, Becky (husband Butch) Peters and Jerry (wife Sandy) Johnson. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews including a special nephew, David Suchocki, many friends at the Anderson and Pendleton Amvets and Eagles Lodge of Alexandria and two faithful companions, his dogs, "Abby & Jodi".
He was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Beverly Johnson; five sisters, Rose McDonald, Barbara Roberts, Sarah Alfrey, Mary Frances Johnson and Betty Adams; two brothers, Thomas Johnson and James Johnson; and one great-granddaughter, Kady Miller.
Service will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Brown-Butz-Diedring Funeral Home with Rev. Richard True officiating. Burial will be in Anderson Memorial Park Cemetery.
