Bessie was born in the City of St. Louis the second child to James Albert Allen Bruton and Lula Mae Whitfield. She was the only girl with three brothers Charles, James, and Walter Bruton. Bessie married at age 18 to Herman Henry Heinrich three children were born, Mae (stillborn), Herman Jr and Betty-Mae Burke. Bessie always wore earrings, no matter what she was doing, she did not fell dressed with- out her earrings.
Bessie retired from the St. Louis County Court House as a Comptometer operator. She died at the same home that she and husband built 75 years before and lived to age 102.
