Civil War service: Stephen enlisted on 4 Aug. 1862 at Slippery Rock, as a private in Company F, 134th Pennsylvania Infantry, for a 9-month term. He re-enlisted on 24 Feb. 1864 as a Private in Capt. Wm. Wren's Company L, 7th Pennsylvania Cavalry. He was mustered out at Macon, Georgia on 23 Aug. 1865.
Stephen moved to Onekama township (then called Portage), Manistee county, Michigan, after the war, along with his parents and siblings. His name appears as an employee of the Telford shingle mill in Portage, between the years 1868-71.
On 2 Nov. 1870 Stephen married Lucy Bishop Guernsey, daughter of Joel and Martha Guernsey who had moved from Steuben Co., New York, to the Onekama area around the same time as the Hilliards. Stephen and Lucy were the parents of ten children, all born at their farm, which was located in section 14, Onekama township, on present-day 11 Mile Road.
Lucy Hilliard died 17 July 1880 at the age of 38, the cause being "cancer in the stomach", which left Stephen with a household of 8 children, ranging in age from 17 (Henry), down to 9 months (Lula - also called "Lizzie").
The following is from an entry in a diary kept by Eleanor (Hilliard) Rogers, Stephen's niece: "July 6, 1892 - Steven Hilliard dyed today at one o'clock at his mother's house, leaving 8 children. Arners and us all went to the funeral. Nels takes Katie and Charley to raise. Katie is 11 years, Charley 9 years."
Other children:
