Dorthea Christiane Thranum Christensen was born 16 Nov 1806 in Copehagen, Copenhagen, Denmark to Christen and Anne Kirstine Pedersen Christensen.

On 31 Mar 1831 at Garnisons Sogn (Church), Kobenhaven (Copenhagen), Denmark, she married artilleryman and farm hand, Mads Christensen, who was born 18 Jul 1798 in Durup, Viborg, Denmark and died 16 May 1860 in Copenhagen, Denmark, son of Christen and Karen Madsdatter Kjeldsen. From the beginning they struggled financially. Because of poor management and seeming more the guest than the owner, Mads and Dorthea lost the inn they owned and all the rest that they had; Mads found other work as a laborer at a cod liver oil factory.

Mads and Dorthea became the parents of four boys; Carl Christian Anton was born 28 Nov 1831; Niels August was born 10 Jun 1834;Mads Frederick Teobald was born 10 Mar 1837 and Otto Edward Wilhelm Thorvald was born 13 Feb 1841, all in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Mads had become a taste for liquor; whether it was his way to cope with depression, their increasing poverty, or PTSD from being in the military, his incessant drinking took it's toll on the stability of their family.

To keep from begging in the streets for handouts, Dorthea started doing laundry and housekeeping, which sapped her strength and helped with the deterioration of her health. Dorthea managed to save enough money from her employment to send each of her boys to an apprentice school in Copenhagen, in order that they might have a chance at a better life.

Dorthea was baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day saints on 17 Aug 1850 after hearing the teachings and testimonies of the four Mormon missionaries who had arrived in Copenhagen. Her husband, Mads Christensen, was vehemently against her joining, as well as their children. With the heavy drinking, the poverty and continuous financial struggles and no end in sight, Dorthea had finally had enough. She and her 4 children left Denmark to join the Saints in Utah, leaving Mads behind; William left Denmark first in 1852, followed by Dorthea and son Fred in December 1853. Carl had stayed in Denmark until 1857; it's not known when Niels August arrived.

Dorthea Christiane Thranum Christensen Christensen died in Salt Lake City, Salt Lake, Utah on 5 Sep 1855 and was buried in the Salt Lake City Cemetery in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Mads Christensen died of Consumption at the hospital in Copenhagen on 16 May 1860, penniless.

Gravesite Details

We thank whomever erected this monument in her honor. We were expecting the worst, having passed so many deteriorated stones of the same era.
