Fred ,as he was known, was a brother to C.C.A. Christensen , the well known pioneer artist. Their father died when he and his two brothers were young. Their mother was determined they should have a good education, so as each reached the age, they attended the "Orphans School." Upon completion, they were apprenticed in a trade. Fred served his apprenticeship as a Saddler. When his mother became converted by the Mormon missionaries, Fred was the first of his brothers to join the Church. Being anxious to go to "Zion," his youngest brother Niels left first. The next year while CCA was on a mission, Fred and his mother had an opportunity to go. After reaching the Valley, Fred was picked to labor south of Salt Lake . William was working in Springville , so Fred got permission to join him. Times were extremely difficult for the boys, but they struggled through. Fred married and later decided to try polygamy. When Brigham Young asked for volunteers to settle "the Muddy," Fred moved his two wives and children to St. Thomas . They lived in a dugout until he was able to make enough bricks for a house. During this time, his wives had children, some of which died. It was another difficult time. Fred worked not only as a farmer, but he and his brother William built a shingle mill. He also worked as a mason, painter, carpenter, paper hanger, and he made fine furniture. Later he ran a harness shop, tuned pianos, and had a photo gallery. He sold Singer sewing machines and organs. In 1877 , he and C.C.A. decided to join together in an artist exhibit of C.C.A. 's paintings on the "Mormon Panorama." Later he sold his interest to C.C.A. He served several missions in Denmark . During the third mission, his wife Sophia died. His children were all grown, so he remained to complete his mission. He was advised to marry again, which he did. Fred wrote the music for several hymns including "Transport," which was in the LDS Psalmody (1889 ). In the 1927 hymn book, it is called "Go Ye Messengers of Heaven." John Taylor wrote the music. He also wrote "Join the Children of the Lord." He left a great legacy to his family.
