Robert and his parents moved from Boone, Iowa to Montgomery County, Iowa when he was age seven. He lived in that county the rest of his life. On May 25, 1938 he married Lena Whipple. They had one daughter, Lucy Jean.

Robert died suddenly of a heart attack while he was scooping corn to feed his livestock. He was found dead in the corn crib at his farm. He'd been in the house only a few minutes before he was found dead. His funeral service was held in Center Ridge Presbyterian Church next to the cemetery in which he is buried.
