Lucy (Menden or Mendenhall) Stanton was born in Suatson, Norfolk, England. She joined the Church of England at age 8. In 1835 she and her parents moved to Cromwell Canada West. She married Jonathan Stanton May 11, 1840 in Canada. They moved to the USA in 1849. She was ill, "a constant sufferer" for the last 20 years of her life. Her husband died a year before she did, but there were five of her 16 children at her bedside when she died, as well as were four of her grandchildren and one niece. Four of her children died in their infancy; and one daughter, Rhoda, predeceased her. Her funeral service was in the Christian Church in Elliott, IA, which is in the same township (Sherman Twp) as was her home.
