Lincoln is the second of three sons and the fourth of six children born to Bernia (Wallace) Smith of Plumerville, Arkansas, and Granville Calvin Smnith, Jr. of Tullahassee, Oklahoma. His father named him after President Lincoln since he was born on Lincoln's birthday, and his oldest sister Barbara - though only a child of four - gave him his middle name, after she continued to repeat the name "Colotion" and her father thought it was a good omen for a child to name a child.

He attended Carter G. Woodson School in Tullahassee, Oklahoma from 1944-45 and when his mother moved the family to Tulsa in 1946, he enrolled at Paul Lawrence Dunbar Elementary School from 1946-1951. From September 1951 to May 26, 1954, he attended George Washington Carver Junior High School and then Booker T. Washington High School in Tulsa from 1954-55, before enlisting in the United States Navy,
July 20, 1955, at the age of 17. L.C.'s tour in the Navy was brief and he received a medical discharge shortly after his enlistment while stationed at the United States Naval Training Command in San Diego, California.

Growing up in Tulsa, L. C. had several jobs, mostly in the hotel and restaurant food services industry. After his discharge form the U. S. Navy, he moved to Detroit, Michigan (1955), Omaha, Nebraska (1959-1962) and Chicago, Illinois (1961-1971). In 1971, he moved to Denver, Colorado and worked for a while for Coors Brewing Company.
