GRANDMA MCGRATH LAID TO REST THIS MORNING
Mrs. Christopher McGrath, the last of that intrepid band of Irish pioneers who settled on "South Prairie" while the Indians still roamed over Waseca county, died at 8:30 last Monday evening at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Joseph Adams of Vivian township. Although 92 years of age, she was quite active until March 17, when she suffered a broken arm in a fall. The shock of the accident and her advanced age brought on complications which caused her death. Margaret Kirk was born near the historic city of Drogheda, in the county Louth, Ireland in 1839. Her mother died when she was an infant and at the age of 12 she came to America with an older brother, Peter Kirk. They lived for a time in Boston and came west to Wisconsin and then to Minnesota. In 1864 she was married at Faribault to Christopher McGrath. After her marriage she came with her husband to Waseca county and located on a farm on what was then known as "South Prairie," which has since been her home. She endured the hardships and privations of the pioneer settlers but was always cheerful and optimistic and was ever ready to help her neighbors in sorrow or trouble. She was a devout member of the Catholic church and her passing removes the last of the heads of the 80 families who subscribed for the building of St. Joseph's church 55 years ago. Mrs. McGrath was the mother of 13 children, only five of whom survive her. They are Francis McGrath and Mrs. Joseph Adams of the Waldorf community; Mrs. Mary Cosgrove of Hurd, N. D.; Mrs. Mattie Williamson and Mrs. Amanda Gates of Portland, Ore. Her husband died several years ago. The funeral was held at 10 a. m. today from All Saints church, New Richland, with Rev. M. C. McVeigh officiating, and burial was beside her husband in the New Richland Catholic cemetery. The pall bearers were John Munsch, James McArdle, Daniel Adams, Patrick Hawkins, J. J. Linnihan and Terence Linnihan, Sr.
