John V. was born in Tennessee, probably in Smith or Wilson County. He was the son of Wiley and Elizabeth Tate Pemberton. He was named for the patriarch of the Tate family, John Ventile Tate.

John married Emily Frances Tate 11 Aug 1864 in Saline County, Illinois. Emily was the daughter of Rev. Charles Spencer Tate and Eliza A. Rose Tate.

John and Emily both died at a fairly early age, but were the parents of five known children: Samuel Turner, John Edward, Louvina, Eliza Frances, and Joseph F. Only the first three lived to adulthood.

Samuel Turner, John Edward and Louvina are mentioned in the estate of their father as minor children of John V., deceased. Their uncle, James F. Winn was appointed guardian 21 Jan 1876, and, upon his resignation 16 Sep 1878, another uncle, W. H. Pemberton, was appointed. It was noted in the estate that John V. Pemberton had deeded 80 acres to the children prior to his death, probably indicating that he was ill for long enough to anticipate his own death. It is also noted that the land was the subject of a lawsuit involving the heirs of John Ventile Tate, the original owner of the land.

Joseph F. is buried here near his parents, having lived only 1 year and 8 months. Emily may have died of complications of chilbirth, having died within a month of Joseph's birth. Note that his headstone states he died in 1885, but the actual date was 1875, before the death of his parents!
