According to his daughter, Clara, Charles S. Pemberton was known as "Uncle Charley" to most who knew him. He was the youngest child of Wiley Pemberton and Elizabeth (Tate) Pemberton and was born in Saline County, Illinois 11 Mar 1855.

On 11 Feb 1875, Charles married Mary Catherine Tate, daughter of William J. Tate and Mary Ann (Winn) Tate. Mary Catherine and Charles were cousins.

Charles and Mary Catherine were the parents of nine known children:

Delia A., b. 1877
Ambrose Clarens, b. 1879, m. Martha Caroline Harris
Loretta "Lora" M., b. 1881, m. Lee Roy Mason

Naomi Cancy, b. 1885, m. Isaac Randall Smith

George Walter, b. 1890. m. Elsie Hinners
Clara Belle, b. 1892, m. Raymond F. Tate

Mary Catherine died in 1902, at age 47. Charley never remarried, and he continued farming in Tate Twp., Saline Co. In 1930, he was residing in Morgan County, Illinois with his daughter Lora Pemberton Mason, He died of cancer 16 Jul 1932 in Tate Twp.
