Son of Edward Harrison and Nannie Parris Byars, husband of Lurline Patton.

MARION - Luther Parris Byars, 62 years old, Marion businessman, died at his summer home at Murrells Inlet Sunday at 6:15 p.m.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 4 p.m. at the Marion Baptist Church, conducted by his pastor, the Rev. Dr. B. F. Allen. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery.

Mr. Byars was a son of the late Edward Harrison Byars and Nancy Parris Byars. He moved from Marion to Forest City, N.C. at the age of three.

He was graduated from the Marion schools and Clemson College, where he received his B.S. degree, Class of 1909. He later received his M.A. and PHD degrees in plant pathology at the University of Wisconsin. He was a member of the honorary scientific fraternity.

After his schooling he accepted a position with the US Department of Agriculture in Washington, where he worked for seven years, and during this time became an authority on disease. Later, he returned to Marion and took over the Ford automobile agency, which he has operated since. He taught a class in the Young People's department and was a member of the board of deacons of his church.

Mr. Byars served the county as state representative two terms and for a number of years was a member of the state board of public welfare. He served as a trustee of Coker College and at the time of his death was a trustee of Limestone College.

He has been president of the Citizens Bank since it was reorganized and a director of the Marion Federal Savings and Loan association, and was a member of the board of directors of the Palmetto State Life Insurance Company. Mr. Byars was a member of the Marion Board of Public Works and served in this capacity about 16 years. He was a Mason and had extensive farming interests.

Surviving are his widow; one daughter, Mrs. John Stedman of Marion; one son, John Arthur Byars of Marion; and one sister, Mrs. J. J. Cozart of Abington, Va.
