EAU CLAIRE, Wis. — Marie Katherine Person Lund, age 91, formerly of Pepin, died Sunday November 9, 2003, at Dove Healthcare Nursing & Rehabilitation in Eau Claire. She was born on July 7, 1912, at home in Levis, the town of Garfield, Jackson County, Wis., to C. Ludvig Person and H. Julia (Larson) Person.

On July 31, 1943, she married Lester Lund at her parents' home in Levis. They had two daughters, Lois (Robert) Scorgie of Eau Claire and Jan Daus of Eau Claire. They lived on the Lund farm near Levis until 1954 when they moved to Pepin, Wis. Lester died in December of 1989. Marie moved to the Mount Washington Assisted Living Residence in Eau Claire in 1991. She has resided at Dove Healthcare since July 2002.

Marie attended the Levis rural school and Lincoln High School, Osseo, Wis. She was confirmed in the Lebanon Lutheran Church at Levis in 1928. She attended one year at St. Olaf College, Northfield, Minn., and graduated from Eau Claire State Teachers College in 1934, with a bachelor's degree in education, a major in high school. She specialized in mathematics and science. Throughout her teaching career she attended post-graduate classes annually, keeping up with the advancement in mathematics and sciences.

Marie, an inspirational teacher, began her 41-year teaching career in 1935, at Levis rural school, Osseo, Wis. She also taught at Squaw Creek State Graded School near Black River Falls, Wis., Fairchild, Wis., Whitewater High School, Whitewater, Wis., Golden Valley rural school, Osseo, Wis., and Pepin High School in Pepin, Wis. For most of her career she taught the higher levels of mathematics, physics and biology. While teaching in Whitewater she was in charge of rationing during WW II. She was one of 300 teachers in the United States to receive an Outstanding Teacher Award in 1976. Lester wrote this the year she retired in 1977. "Because of her wonderful teaching ability, she turned out some remarkable students: doctors, engineers, teachers, computer experts and various others with successful vocations."

Marie and Lester were very active in their community. At church, Marie sang in the choir, taught Sunday school and Bible school, led a women's group, contributed her famous watermelon pickles and other crafts to the church bazaars and with Lester represented the church at many district and state meetings.

When interest in Laura Ingalls Wilder began in Pepin, Marie became the president of the Laura Ingalls Wilder Society and continued to lead the organization for 25 years. She and Lester thoroughly enjoyed meeting people from around the world who visited Pepin because of her interest in Laura. Each year they tallied the visitors who signed the guest book at the Laura Ingalls Wilder site. For several springs Marie guided buses filled with fourth graders on their visit to the Laura Ingalls Wilder home site. She and Lester attended district and state local history conventions and visited the other Laura Ingalls Wilder sites in the Midwest.

Marie was a very talented seamstress. In addition to making clothes for her family, after her retirement, she made over 200 quilt tops for Lutheran World Relief and crocheted 50 lap ropes, which she donated to area nursing homes.

Preceding her in death were her parents; husband, Lester; brothers, C. Albin Person and Leonard Person; one sister, Grace Person; a niece, Kayleen Person Olson; and a great-nephew, Greg Steahr.

She is survived by her daughters; son-in-law; granddaughter, Amy Lund; sisters-in-law, Alice Person and Lillian McManners; seven nieces and nephews; nine great-nieces and nephews; and eight great-great nieces and nephews.

A luncheon will be served at South Beef River Lutheran Church, rural Osseo, after the committal service. Friends may call from 12:30 p.m. until the time of services at the funeral home on Thursday.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be given to Laura Ingalls Wilder Association, Pepin, Wis., and Levis Cemetery, rural Osseo.
