Sandusky Co., Ohio MILITARY RECORDS, CIVIL WAR:

Ira Crane was a volunteer and enlisted Nov. 1, 1861 at Freemont, Ohio for 3 years at age 19.
He served as a private in CO. F., 72nd Ohio Vol. Infantry.

CASUALTY SHEET: Ira Crane, Pvt. CO. F. 72 Reg. O. Vol.
Place of casualty- Vicinity of Vicksburg, MS. Wounded arm slightly May 19, 1863.

Discharged by virtue of re-enlistment as a veteran volunteer Dec. 3, 1863-mustered in Jan. 3, 1864 for 3 years at Germantown, Tennessee.

REMARKS ON MILITARY RECORD:
"Veteran was taken prisoner June 11, 1864 near Ripley, MS., and paroled, then lost on the steamer Sultana. He had been a prisoner of war, captured at Guntown, MS. June 11, 1964, near Ripley. As a prisoner, he was confined at the Andersonville Prison and exchanged Apr. 15, 1865 to go to Vicksburg, MS. Apr. 29, 1865 but perished on board the Sultana April 27, 1865.

FURTHER REMARKS: The steamer "Sultana" was lost on the Miss. river about 9 miles above Memphis, Tennessee about 2: A.M. Apr. 27, 1865 by the explosion of her boilers".

St. Louis, April 28.--A telegram received by the military authorities from New Madrid, says the steamer Sultana with 2,000 paroled prisoners, exploded, 1400 lives were lost.

SECOND DISPATCH:

CAIRO, April 28.--The steamer Sultana from New Orleans the 21st, arrived at Vicksburg with boiler leaking badly. She remained 30 hours repairing, and taking on 1,996 Federal soldiers and 35 officers, lately released from Cahawba and Andersonville prisons.

She arrived at Memphis last evening, and after coaling, proceeded at 2 a.m.
7 miles up, she blew up and immediately took fire and burned to the water's edge.
Of 2,100 souls on board, not more than 700 will be recovered.
500 were rescued, and all now are in the hospital.

Capt. Mason, of the Sultana, is supposed to be lost.
At 4 o'clock this morning, the river in front of Memphis was covered with soldiers struggling for life. Many were badly scalded.
Boats immediately went to their rescue and are [still] engaged in picking them up.
Gen. Washburne immediately organized a board of officers to investigate the affair. They are now at work.

WIDOW'S ARMY PENSION STATEMENT: Sarah E. Crane, widow.
March 26, 1866:
Sarah stated that her late husband, Ira Crane left no surviving children as they had been married only a short time. She also stated that Ira had not been previously married. The date of their marriage was given as 4 Mar. 1864 in Clyde, Ohio by John B. Bush, J. P. Her maiden name was Sarah E. Risley.

Sarah Risley Crane led quite a life after the death of Ira Crane.

OTTOWA COUNTY CEMETERY RECORDS: Sarah was buried beside her 5th husband, George Henry Foster.

2. Napoleon B. Clark, married 28 Feb. 1866, divorced 23 Mar. 1906. ( In this divorce, she was granted her previous name of Sarah E. Crane. Clark had deserted her for 3 years)
3. James J. Reynolds,( alias Erwin J. Reynolds) married 10 May 1881. (Sarah declared in the pension records that she believed that said N. B. Clark had procured a divorce from her before her marriage of 1881 to Reynolds).
She was divorced from James J. Reynolds on 23 Dec. 1891.
4. George Henry Foster, (alias George Henry) married 24 Dec. 1891 (yes, one day after the divorce from Reynolds). George Henry died 5 Dec., 1899.
5. John Anderson, married 20 Apr. 1907. John Andersn died 23 Oct., 1910.

Sarah again got a renewal of Pension on Ira Crane of $12 per month from Apr. 17, 1906 to the date of her marriage to John Anderson- then renewed the Pension again after Anderson's death until her death on 22 September, 1914.
