Amos W. Crane was born ca. 1810-1813 in Bethel, Windsor Co., Vermont, his exact birth date is unknown. He was the son of Amos and Welthy Crane. His father fought in the Revolutionary War, and the Crane descendants continued the policy of serving their country in times of war.

He moved to Sandusky Co., Ohio ca., 1827-1830 from the Bethel, Vermont area. Amos W. was not listed in the 1830 census, but could have arrived after the census was taken or living with someone else at that time. In an old article from Sandusky Co., Ohio, 1831, he was described as a man over the age of 21, a resident of Green Creek Twp. In the land records of Sandusky Co., Vol. E., page 437, it shows Amos W. Crane of Sandusky Co., purchasing 147.45 acres from the U.S. Government in Green Creek Twp. for the amount of $184.00 on 20 Sept. 1830, and received the deed to this land 9 Apr., 1832. This land, section 8, range 16, twp 4, in Green Creek twp, lies along U.S. Highway 20 northeast of Clyde, Ohio. His plot of land was also just across the road from the land of George Glick, his future father inlaw.

SANDUSKY COUNTY OHIO HISTORY, page 244, states that Amos Crain, was recruited in the Mexican War in either Capt. A.C. Bradley's , or Capt. J.A. Jones Co., He was a private in Co., C., 15th Reg. of the U.S. Infantry. He died of sickness during the Mexican War near Pueblo, Mexico. I have the pension papers that Esther claimed on for Amos's service in this war. There was no record of where Amos W. was laid to rest. It was reported that many years after the war, a U.S.A. president was apparently angered by the fact that many of the soldiers starved to death, and were buried in mass graves. He was instrumental in having a place for a memorial built for the soldiers of the Mexican War, but the Mexican government would not allow the use of any words pertaining to the battle on the memorial.
