From the "Sandusky County History", by Everett, page 312,

Joel Crane was a Pvt., in Co G., 72nd Ohio Volunteer Infantry. He enlisted 11 Nov. 1861, age 29. Discharged at Camp Chase, Ohio, 30 July 1862 with a surgeon's certificate of disability. (the Civil War Soldier's Database from the Rutherford B. Hays Presidential Center in Sandusky Co., Ohio, states his age as 28 at the time of enlistment).

SURGEON'S CERTIFICATE OF DISABILITY:
"Disability and valvular disease of the heart and said soldier will not again be able to resume his duties-health was bad at time of enlistment and should have caused his rejection,"

In the "Roster of Ohio Soldiers in the Civil War", it lists Joel as being in Co., F., of the O.V.I. along with two brothers, Ira, and Amos.

WAR DEPT. ADJUTANT GEN'L OFFICE, APR. 5, 1886.
Joel Crain, Pvt., Co. F., 72nd Reg. Ohio Vol., enrolled Nov. 11, 1861 at Fremont for 3 yrs. He was sent to General Hospital May 10, 1862 and discharged July 29. 1862 on a certificate of disability.

JOEL CRANE STATEMENT FOR PENSION, State of Ohio, age 59, of Lake Millby, Wood Co., Ohio.
" I first felt and became disabled by rheumatism and chronic diarrhea after the Battle of Pittsburgh Landing, and while on the march to Corinth in Apr. 1862 and have been nearly incapacitated from doing manual labor since-that most of the time being unable to move around and at present wholly unable to work".

U.S. PENSION AGENCY-Mar. 22, 1895.
I hereby report that the name of Joel Crane who was a pensioner on the rolls has been dropped because of information from Bureau of Pensions that pensioner died Feb. 6, 1895. (this record says he died in 1895, but the rest of the affidavits taken on his record states he died in 1896).

OBITUARY: Clipping from Elmore, Ohio (no date given)

"The remains of Joel Crane, an old soldier, were brought to Fremont from Webb Station, Wood Co., Ohio, and interred in Oakwood Cemetery. He was a member of Co., F., 72nd O.V.I., and had two brothers belonging to the same regiment. One brother was on the Sultana when that boat blew up, and lost his life. A second brother died in a southern hospital. His father died in the Mexican War. The aged wife and mother of these men is still living at 84 years of age, and accompanied her son's remains to Fremont. The deceased was 63 years of age and well known here about, especially by the boys of the old 72nd. Rev. W.F. Schott officiated at the funeral services."

Note: The above obituary for Joel Crane has him listed as being buried in the Oakwood Cemetery. This is an error, as there is a G.A.R. (Civil War) marker for Joel in Green Creek, Dana Cemetery.
