From The Descendents of Hugh Thomson by Donald C. Thomson:

Jeannette [sp] was born near Stranraer, Scotland, 1 Jan 1844 and may have been named after her great-grandmother, Jean Saul. During the voyage to America in 1856, all of the family members were sick except her father and herself. They had to care for the sick and carry food to the big kitchen to be prepared by the cook, which was more difficult than the present mode of serving steamer passengers. The cook and sailors took great interest in little Jeannette as she had to press through crowds and go on the dangerous deck alone.

In Henderson Co., Ill., she married William Brown Mekemson 28 Dec 1865. They farmed in Henderson Co. for a few years, then moved to Madison Co., Ia., in 1867. They had a large family. The parents and all but the younger children were listed in the 1880 census in Iowa; but only their initials were used. They were members of the Presbyterian Church at Pitzer.

William received a military pension for a disability. This pension file had his wife's name spelled "Jannette", but her signature was not on any of the records.
The last thirty years they spent in the vicinity of Redding, Ia. Jeanette died in Diagonal, Ia., 17 June 1925, followed closely by William's death 5 Nov 1926. Both are buried in Redding Cemetery.
