Mrs. Ruby Oakley Thompson, age 95, passed away Friday, November 4, 2011. Ruby graduated from the Georgia State College for women in 1936 and later earned a Master of Arts from there. After teaching for 15 years (14 in Fulton County), she was asked by Fulton County School Superintendent to become principal at Riley Elementary School in Palmetto. She later was principal at Josephine Wells in Hapeville, Eastern in Red Oak, and S.L. Lewis in East Point. She retired in 1982 after 42 years of service with the Fulton County Board of Education. Ruby was also a charter member of the Gamma Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa, an international honorary organization of women educators. A faithful Christian, Ruby joined Bethany United Methodist Church in 1927. She taught Sunday School from the time she was 19 years of age until she was 90 and assisted her husband in his ministry at numerous United Methodist Churches in the Atlanta area. Ruby enjoyed working in her garden, playing cards, traveling, and visiting with her family and friends. A person who enjoyed having fun, Ruby maintained her sense of humor throughout her final illness. She was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Julian Franklin Thompson and is survived by her sons Andy and David.
