He leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Ella "Pinkie" Dockery Strawn , with whom he shared "a one of a kind love affair" for many years, his daughter, Iyonka Marie and son, Calbert Carver Strawn, Jr., with whom he was always giving love and providing for their intellectual, spiritual and emotional well being to enrich their lives. Four sisters: Mrs. Barbara S. Williams of Roosevelt, Long Island, NY, Mrs. Delphine S. Draper, Mrs. Maxine Martin, and Mrs. Rita Agnew all of Martinsville, Va.; three brothers: William M. Strawn, Jr. of Fairfax County, Va., James E. Strawn of Reidsville, NC and Melvin D. Strawn of Silver Spring, Maryland; six aunts: Miss Mabel D. Hairston, Mrs. Bessie Hairston, Mrs. Gracie Strong, Mrs. Edna Deshazo all of Martinsville, Mrs. Jessie Strawn of Atlanta, Georgia and Miss Mary Strawn of Baltimore, Maryland and a host of nieces,nephews and other relatives and friends.
He attended Albert Harris School. In October 1963,he joined the U. S. Navy where he became a certified emergency Technician and earned honors for his work as an independent duty corpsman. He volunteered to serve three terms of duty during the Vietnam War where he received recognition and medals including the Silver Star and consideration for the Purple Heart. He was honorably discharged in 1978.
In his last years his attention was to his children with unconditional love for them.
