Margaretha Barbara Bauer Buchinger was the eldest of five children born to Johann Sebastian Bauer (1811-1891) and his wife Catharina Barbara Baumgärtner Bauer (ca. 1809-aft. 1892). The family, members of a Lutheran community, worked a small farm in Neuses, near Roßtal in Mittelfranken, Bavaria. Margaretha was baptized in Roßtal's Laurentiuskirche on January 29, 1839. Her father declared the family's intention to emigrate to America on March 18, 1850. They left on May 1 of that year, joining the large migration of Bavarian Lutherans to the frontier of Michigan. The family cleared a farm near the recently established Frankenlust township in Bay Co.

In 1859 Margaretha married John/Johann Michael Buchinger (1834-1914), a native of Roßtal. The couple settled on a farm in Richville (formerly Frankenhilf), Tuscola Co.. There they raised eleven children: George/Georg (b. 1858), Charles (b. 1860), Eva Barbara (b. 1861), Margaretha Katharina Luisa (b. 1863), Mary Barbara (b. 1865), George Conrad (b. 1867), John Georg Conrad (b. 1868), John Michael (b. 1874), Friedericka Wilhelmina (b. 1876), William John (b. 1878), and Kunigunda Emilie (b. 1880). Margaretha died from stomach cancer at the age of 67.
