NAME: Hazel Neva Porter (1920-1920).
MOTHER: Rosie Cannon Porter (1887-1920).
FATHER: Ray Porter (1888–1964).

-- -- -- -- --

1920 UNITED STATES FEDERAL CENSUS.
Benton, Edna Township, Cass County, Iowa.
Enumeration Date: January 9, 1920.

Beginning on Line # 4:
The Family of Ray Porter, 32; with his wife, Rosa Blanche [Cannon] Porter, 32. "Rosie" is eight months pregnant with their unborn baby girl, who would be named "Hazel."

The Porter children who are listed on the 1920 Census are: Blanche, age 12; Lillian, 10; Carl, 8; Rose, 6; Arlie, age 4 yrs. 11 months; & Vallie Porter, 2 yrs., 9 months. (Residing nextdoor is Ray's youngest brother, Joe Porter, and his wife, Goldie).

FEBRUARY 9, 1920:
Exactly one month after Ray and Rosie Porter provided the census enumerator with information about themselves and their children for inclusion on the 1920 United States Federal Census, tragedy struck their family. Ray's beloved wife, Rosie, unexpectedly died in childbirth. Their infant daughter, "Hazel Neva Porter," also died on Feb. 9, 1920.

Because "February 9th" was not only the day of her birth, but also the day of her death, no "photographs" exist to memoralize this little girls' future birthdays, or her wedding, or the other life events that 'should' have taken place.
However, on January 9, 1920, when this Census page was enumerated, baby Hazel was indeed a healthy (albeit, "not-yet-born") baby.

This old census page is the only "formal record" of this infant's short life. (However, this baby girl is included in the Porter family genealogy).

Mother and daughter were buried together, in the "Reno Methodist Cemetery," in Cass County, Iowa.

Rest in Peace.
